These people are not farmers by profession; what draws them here is their love of the land.
Yang said at first the soil was sticky, but after they began mixing in rice husks and other natural fertilizers, they began to see some positive results.
Without the use of harmful chemical pesticides, there are of course caterpillars and other insects that feast on the crops.
Sie Miao-cin says the bugs eat two thirds of the crops, and the remaining one third is for the people working the land.
After fermentation, this mixture of fallen leaves, soybean dregs and rice bran creates a white fungus which may not seem that valuable to some, but for these people it is as good as gold.
Lai Jiao-yan says the fungus is very effective and there is no need to use great amounts to be able to grow crops for a long period of time.
A mixture of some weeds into a liquid enzyme can be used in place of harmful pesticides in helping to increase crop resistance to bugs.
Lai said after a rain, when the crops have dried a bit, you can spray some of the liquid onto the crops to help increase the number of fungi on leaves. She said if the fungi are increased, crops are unlikely to wither and look much better in the process.
Lai brought back the knowledge of how to use natural materials for pesticides from Japan. She is dedicated to finding ways to bring back more natural ways of cultivating crops. Despite the obstacles, everyone here seems to have the same mission of safeguarding the land.
Liao Siou-luan says others may say it is impossible not to use pesticides, but they are going to stick to their methods and let the results do their talking.
Agricultural expert Huang Da-jhong brought some of the technology he learned in the United States back with him to help cultivate micro-organic fungi and liquid fertilizers. Spraying the mixtures on plant leaves can help to kill harmful agents.
Huang says they hope one gram of their mixtures can create one hundred million microorganisms to fight harmful agents in the soil. He said once the harmful agents begin to infiltrate the soil, the microorganisms can cut their food sources, thereby decreasing their chances of survival.
But the process of moving to more organic methods of growing crops has not all been smooth sailing.

這一堆肥裏的落葉，豆渣，和米糠，發酵後產生的白色菌絲，在賴嬌燕眼裏看來全部都是寶。
農民賴嬌燕：這叫土著菌，土著菌有成千上百萬的種類，所以它在整個過程中，你不用放太多肥料，就有辦法維持一段期間，可以做蔬菜栽培。
利用路邊野草浸泡，略帶酸味的是酵素液，可以取代農藥殺蟲增加作物的抵抗力。
農民賴嬌燕：下雨之後，稍微乾的時候，噴上去它可以增加葉面的菌種，如果它增加菌種的話，它不容易生病菜也比較漂亮。
結合天然素材，賴嬌燕將從日本取經回來的技術，全部投入農作上，試圖找回自然原始的耕作法，儘管阻礙重重，還是堅持到底。
農友廖秀鑾：別人說如果農藥不噴的話長不起來，就讓他們去說，我們不回應，做給人家看。
農業專家黃大忠將他在美國所學的技術，培養出微生物菌種和液態肥，噴灑在植物葉面，成功排擠有害菌種。
黃大忠：在一公克土壤裏面，我們希望它能達到一億微生物，屬於非良性的微生物，當它們進來的時候，它們的食物相對的減少，所以它們生存的機會降低。
雖然路走得並不平順，但他們的心都是一分對土地的熱愛。
